What is Mental Health?

December 30, 2024

Mental health is integral to our overall well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. Just as we care for our physical health, our mental health deserves attention and nurturing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines mental health as encompassing “our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.” Similarly, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains, "Mental health helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. It’s important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood and aging."

The World Health Organization (WHO) further elaborates, describing mental health as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

We all have mental health, just as we have physical health. And just as physical health conditions may require medical attention, so too can mental health conditions, often referred to as mental illnesses.

For example, consider diabetes. Some individuals are born with Type 1 diabetes, while others may develop Type 2 diabetes over time. In both cases, steps can be taken to manage or prevent the condition. Mental health works similarly. Some people are born with mental health conditions, while others develop them due to life circumstances or environmental factors. And just as we take preventive measures for our physical health—like eating a balanced diet, exercising, and getting enough sleep—we can also take proactive steps to support our mental health.

The YMCA provides a unique opportunity to support both physical and mental wellness. It's more than a gym; it's a community—a "third place" where you can engage in activities that benefit body and mind alike. Whether it’s a yoga class, group fitness session, or simply connecting with others in a welcoming environment, the Y empowers you to take charge of your health holistically.
